The Importance of Direction in Vastu Shastra
The science of Vastu Shastra (the science of the environment) explains how to organize your house so it will harmonize with nature. The rules of Vastu Shastra operate on a principle of direction and orientation; each direction has a different type of energy (positive or negative). By building or using a space in line with these energies, positive energy can pass throughout a house and enhance and support the person's life.
Thus, the role of direction in Vastu Shastra is very important; when used accurately, directions will bring peace, health and prosperity to a person; when misaligned, the person may be faced with negative energy (stress) and limitations.
Natural Forces of Direction in Vastu
The earth has 4 major natural sources of energy: the sun, wind, gravity and electromagnetism. The way that each energy source is available to the earth varies depending on its orientation in relation to the North-South-East-West of the earth's rotation, its distance from the earth, the time of day/year and the season. In Vastu, the study of these energies and their use is done to ensure that the design of your house will allow the positive energies from these sources to flow through your house and to make people living in your home to feel calm and positive and to have focus.
Meaning of Important Directions in Vastu
- The North Direction: According to Vastu, the North direction represents opportunities, and is therefore where the entrance to your home, or office, should be located, in order to allow the movement of financial growth into the house or office. In addition, there is a connection between the North direction and Kubera, the god of wealth.
- The East Direction: The eastern area of a house will receive sunlight at the beginning of every day. The eastern area is considered to be the area of health, newness, and new beginnings. For this reason, many Vastu Experts will recommend that the location of windows or the main entranceway of your home be in the east direction.
- The South Direction: The south direction of a home is considered an area of strength and stability. This is why one should place heavier furniture or storage units in the south area of one's home to create stability.
- The West Direction: The west direction of a home is thought to be an area of stability and progress and may be an excellent area for study or to set up a dining room.
- The North-East Direction: The north-east direction is considered the most holy and auspicious direction in Vastu. This direction would be great for a prayer room or an area to meditate, as it brings spiritual energy, harmony, and peace.
